in Spain

When you settle in to your new home in the area the following is just a few examples of things to do or places to go. If you have not purchased yet we have availble Luxury Villas with Private Pools, Apartments etc. This area has many Sandy Beaches, Great Restaurants and Bars, authentic Spanish Culture, a lovely Old Town, a bustling Port -  Javea has it all.  Situated about about an hour from Alicante on the Costa Blanca.  It offers beautiful beaches, low-rise development and a real taste of Spain.
Arenal is maybe unique on this coast  because it is a World Health Organization accredited "clean beach",  is surrounded by sensitive development, and on top of that has the most gentle slope into the Sea you are likely to encounter.

Behind the Beach is a Promenade lined with Bars and Restaurants offering everything from Live Bands to Traditional Restaurants.  In the evening this is a great place for a stroll - and there are Craft Stalls set up along the Prom.  This is one of the three centres of Javea. The others are the Port and the Old Town.  A great way to get between these three areas in the fun Train which runs right up till the wee hours back and forth.
The Port
This is where the majority of the Shops are, some good Restaurants, Tapas Bars and of course Fishing Boats!  This part of town is visited by Tourists just like everywhere else but you feel that it is very much a Spanish Community and this is where the Fiestas take place - the Moors and the Christians in July and the Festival of the Port in September.  Amongst the Shops to look out for are Polly's Bookshop which is run by a charming Scottish Couple -   and has a fantastic selection of second hand holiday reads.
Also, right  opposite is a favourite Restaurant, El Posito, the best for fresh fish and a relaxed atmosphere.  It is right on the front so you get a lovely Sea Breeze if you dine there on a warm Summer evening.
javea beach.jpg (18990 bytes) javea harbour.jpg (21661 bytes)
Taking the road West from the Port you will pass about six "chiringuitos" which are Summer Bars open from Midday till about 4am which are a great place for a cool late night drink - they have music playing and are populated almost exclusively by local Spanish people and are a great way to end the evening. Chiringuito on Javea Beach
The Old Town
This is where you will find the main Church, the Market, Post Office and the usual Restaurants and Bars.  Although it seems very old, the main road that runs through it was only tarmaced 30 years ago!  In the main "casco urbano" surrounding the Market and Church there are narrow "Moorish style" streets which cars cannot access, but which are lined on both sides by shops of all kinds, Art Galleries and Restaurants.

Boardwalk Sculptures
Each year the Council sponsors artists to create Modern Sculptures to decorate the Boardwalk.  So far there are no explanatory leaflets available about them - but here are a couple of pictures to give you an idea - I think they are pretty stunning.....if not always easily understandable!!

Alicante The Capital Alicante or Alicant is situated in a bay which is closed in to the north by Cabo Las Huertas and to the south by Cabo Santa Pola, and enjoys pleasant temperatures all year round with average of 18 degrees.
A tour in the city would usually start in the Paseo Maritimo, a promenade, or Explanada de Espana where both tourists and local people stroll under shade provided by two rows of tall palm trees.
The Iglesia de Santa Maria is in the square of the same name and is one of the city's most famous monuments.
Municipal Art Museum (tel.: 514.07.68) in the Casa de la Asegurada where paintings are on display.
The Symbolis Fortress, the Castillo de Santa Barbara, is located 200 metres up on Benacantil hill.  This castle comprises three different enclosures each at different heights on the bare rock.  The lower enclosure dates from the Bourbon era, the middle precinct from the sixteenth century and the upper is part of the site of the original fortress.  The castle had drawbridges, dungeons, living quarters for the nobility, turrets, a gunpowder arsenal and the eighteenth century chapel, Ermita de Santa Barbara.   It can be entered from Paseo de Gomiz through a tunnel 200 metres long which has been dug into the rock.  At the end of the tunnel are two lifts which go up to the fortress.
Hemmed in by the port to the south and the Grossa mountains to the north, playa (beach) of Postiguet, in the heart of the city, is very popular in the summer.
Altea Hills Yachts Visit Altea Hills and enjoy a stroll around the Greenish Marina, probably the most exclusive and home of some of the biggest luxury yachts on the Costa Blanca. Calpe Ifach The Phoenicians called the Rock of Ifach the Northern Rock to distinguish it from Gibraltar, the Southern Rock, as these were the only spectacular promontories they encountered in their travels to the western shores of the Mediterranean.
Ifach is indeed a large rock, measuring 332m in height.  Today, it is been transformed into a nature park to protect its unique vegetation and over 300 species of animals, including colonies of sea birds that use it as a nesting area.  Located here is a nature school where local carnations and even original Robertonian orchids can be admired.  The park itself can be reached up a zigzagging track which is compulsory climbing for anyone anxious to get a panoramic view over the entire Marina Alta coastline.   Mountaineers use the southern face for practice, as it drops straight down to the sea.

Valley of Wine The Jalon valley is named after the Jalon river, it flows through the village Jalon, which lies some 7 Km. from Benissa, 15 Km. from Calpe.  The famous Jalon wines, strong red and the sweet mistela or moscatel wine, are sold in two bodegas, where they encourage you to try out their product.  You buy the wine by the litre, so take your bottle(s) along.  The other bodega is privately owned, has an extremely pleasant renovated interior, and sells local wine as well as bottled wine.
Every Tuesday a market - vegetables, clothes, shoes etc. - is held in the square and the adjacent streets.
On Saturday mornings an enormous car boot sale and antique market is held on the waste land opposite the bodega under the huge eucalyptus trees, well worth going to.
