What to Do in Elche on The Costa Blanca
Visitors
to Elche have a wide range of places of interest and activities to
choose from. If you want to know a bit more about our history and
culture we recommend an enjoyable stroll along the monumental route. In just a few hours you will be able to see our most emblematic monuments as well as visiting interesting museums.
If wildlife is what most interests you, we suggest an ecological route taking in Elx marshes, of great ecological value. Neither must you forget a visit to Elche’s beaches or the beautiful palm plantations that make up the Elx Palm Grove, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000.
The city’s festivals occupy a privileged place among its cultural activities, endowing the city with a vibrant note of colour. Of all of the fiestas that take place throughout the year, the Elche Mystery Play, declared World Heritage by UNESCO in 2001, is undoubtedly the most important.
Elche
is a welcoming city which has a lot of leisure activities to offer at
night, as well as during the day, with its commercial and services
sectors, and its shopping areas and street markets offering all manner of goods and crafts.
For sports
lovers, the city has numerous sports facilities where all types of
sports can be played. Moreover, Elx also has one of Spain’s largest
football stadiums with a crowd capacity of 39,000 spectators.
Elche has something for all tastes and visitors to the city will enjoy an unforgettable stay.
Elx. World Footwear Capital
The footwear manufacturing industry and that of its component parts
have undeniably been the city’s economic motor for decades with over
2,100 production and sales centres. Indeed, these centres constitute
12% of the city’s 12,400 registered businesses.
Within
Spain, Elx is an important player in the footwear industry. Its
1,100–plus companies in this sector make up 42% of all such companies
in Spain, employing over 18,000 highly qualified workers.
Production
is commercialised both in the domestic market and abroad. The sector’s
enterprising spirit has led it to export to, and have an important
presence in, markets such as those in the European Union, the United
States and other emerging markets, thus diversifying distribution.
Alicante’s exports index is one of the highest in Spain, thanks in
great part to Elx’s footwear sector.
The
companies in this sector are constantly improving their competitiveness
in international markets. At present, they are using new strategies
based on brands, design, fashion, quality, research, respect for the
environment, new technologies and high standards of service.
As
footwear production has grown, so have those companies supplying
component parts, raw materials and accessories. This industry has a
higher level of territorial concentration since over 75% of the Spanish
companies working in this sector are to be found within Elx’s city
limits and supply both Spanish and, as its increasing export figures
show, international markets with high-quality products of unbeatable
design.
Palm Plantations
The Palm Grove, declared a World Heritage Site in November 2000 by UNESCO is the largest in Europe, boasting more than 200,000 palm trees.
Within the borough of Elx an area of 5,400,000m2
is occupied by palm plantations the largest of which are located around
the built-up area. The rest are scattered around Camp d’Elx, or
surrounding countryside. The 2,700,000m2 of urban plantations are distributed thus: 2,000,000m2 are now public property and the remaining 700,000m2 are private.
Elx
Town Hall is undertaking an integrated programme to restore the palm
grove to its former glory, recovering its traditional structure and
other singular elements related to its past agricultural use, such as
adobe walls, the irrigation network, traditional houses and even the
crops.
Because of the unique typology and location,
some of the palm plantations have been restored for the use and
enjoyment of the general public as parks and gardens.
